Regular maintenance is the key to extending your car's life expectancy. Some tasks are often forgotten. Prevent costly damages and make your vehicle last longer by remembering these tasks.

The Maintenance Tasks You Often Forget

For diligent and responsible car owners who want to extend their car’s life expectancy, getting regular synthetic oil changes and periodically tuning up their engine is natural. But even the most dedicated car owner can overlook some other maintenance tasks that are equally as important. Some parts of your vehicle don’t need such regular maintenance, but they still need to be taken care of. Over time, ignoring these task can bring negative effects to your vehicle.

Changing the Air Filter

Several filters help maintain your vehicle clean and functioning, among them, are the air filters. Most cars have one air filter for the engine and one for the cabin. Since we can’t see them, many of us forget to replace them. They’re cheap and easy to find. Replacing them occasionally can help preserve your engine and improve your cabin’s air quality.

Fuel System Cleaning

There’s always sludge, carbon, dirt, and rust flowing through your fuel system. If it’s only a bit, there’s no problem, but as the build-up grows, it becomes harder for the fuel to move. Once sludge forms, the engine loses strength and its fuel intake becomes greater. It’s a good idea to do a full fuel system cleaning once or twice a year. You can use AMSOIL’s Quickshot® to help you out with the cleaning task. Be sure to refuel your tank with good quality fuel to avoid more sludge formation.

Brake Fluid Flush

The brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it collects moisture. Even if the brake system is perfectly sealed, the brake fluid can manage to absorb moisture, lowering its boiling temperature, increasing the chances of rust and corrosion in the brake system, and making the brakes feel spongy. You should change your brake fluid with AMSOIL'S DOT 3 and DOT 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid every time you replace your brake pads to avoid moisture and corrosion. Remember you can get your brake fluid and all other fluids your car needs at AMSOIL’s online store or by calling Amsoil4liny at (888) 826-7645 and placing your order.

Wheel Alignment

The wrong wheel alignment can cause your tires to wear out unevenly and problems with the suspension system. Over time and by hitting potholes or curbs, the alignment disappears completely. You should have your wheels aligned at least once a year. FYI if your mechanic doesn’t offer to align your wheels, they probably won’t do it, so be sure to ask for one next time you go.

Cooling System Service

Around 40 percent of all engine failures happen because of the cooling system. The cooling system prevents the engine from overheating and corrosion from forming.  Sludge and slime can start to build in the cooling system and block the radiator and fluid passages, causing the engine to overheat or expensive damages to occur. You should flush and refill your cooling system using a high-quality antifreeze/coolant such as AMSOIL's Low Toxicity Antifreeze and Engine Coolant every fall and spring. Avoid products that contain inorganic salts which can cause sludge and scale deposits after some time.

Service the Air Conditioning System

Typical, the moment you need your air conditioner the most, it breaks down. No one wants to face the summer heat with a broken air conditioner. This situation can be easily avoided by servicing the air conditioning system. The AC compressor requires oil to lubricate the seals and moving parts. During the winter months when the air conditioning system is not used, these oils end to drain away from all the necessary places. Taking care of the AC is the easiest thing. You just need to turn it on for 15 minutes or so at least once a month to keep the oil circulating. You also need to replenish the fluid once a year and check the system for leaks.

Check Your Headlights

Over time, your headlights’ casings can become yellow and dirty. This results in poor illumination when you’re out on the road. Many stores sell a certain chemical and polish that can bring brightness back to your lights. Don’t forget to check that all the light bulbs that illuminate parts of your car are working too.
