When it comes to a summer road trip, most motorists think that it’s as easy as jumping in the car and heading off! In reality, however, there are a few quick tips to follow to prevent breakdowns and keep you safe on the road. As fun as a road trip is, simply getting all of your friends or family into the car and leaving for your destination isn’t the best way to go about things. Why? Because without some engine maintenance and safety tips, you and your passengers could end up spending much of your time waiting for help on the side of the road instead of lazing by the beach!

Get to Where You’re Going This Summer Road Trip

To help you get to your destination safely and without incident, below are some easy-to-follow tips from amsoil4liny.

Do Your Tires Pass the Test?

Just because your tires are tough doesn’t mean that they are impenetrable. In fact, if you think about the types of condition you make them drive you through you may be surfside at just how much they have to go through each day! To make sure they are ready for a long road trip, take your vehicle out into the sunlight and give them a quick visual inspection, paying attention to these items:
  • Is there any debris lodged the tire itself?
  • How about debris stuck in between the tread which you can’t remove?
  • Is there enough tread?
  • Are there parts of your tire which have no tread at all?
If any of the above seem like a problem before your road trip is the best time to get it sorted. Why? Because something as simple as lodged debris can cause a tire blowout, which you really don’t want to experience while driving at high speed towards the beach or your favorite camping site!

Under Pressure?

On the subject of tires, now would be a great time to check their pressure? There are two primary reasons why this is important before your road trip. The first is fuel economy. If your tires are under inflated then more of the tread is coming into contact with the road, causing friction. This friction works against you with your vehicle needing to use more power (gas) to keep you moving. The second is maneuverability. Once you increase your tire pressure to the correct levels you will notice that your vehicle is easier to steer. Not only is this great for city driving but can also help to keep you and your passengers out of trouble on the freeway.

Check Your Fluids

The summer heat can take a toll on your fluid levels, leaving your engine susceptible to damage during long drives. The best way to prevent this? Check your fluid levels! It’s as easy as checking the following:
  • Engine Oil
  • Coolant
  • Brake Fluid
  • Transmission Fluid
  • Wiper Fluid
When checking these levels, also pay attention to the quality of the fluid. If you can see that the fluid has passed its usefulness or there is debris in the tanks, clean it out and replace the fluid. Something simple like this can prevent you and your passengers from waiting on the side of the road with steam pouring from your engine instead of enjoying the beach! Are You Sure You Can Stop?

There is a big difference between taking your foot off the gas pedal to slow your vehicle down and then lightly touching the brakes to bring yourself to a full stop, and hitting the brakes hard to avoid an incident on the freeway while driving at high speed. The best way to ensure that your brakes are ready for the latter is to give them a quick visual inspection. When you’re doing this, look to see if you can notice the indicator pin poking through the pad, if there is any film on your brake pads, or if you can clearly see that they’re ready to be replaced in a few weeks or so. Even if they have ‘just a few weeks’ left on them, before a long drive at high speeds is a great time to replace them, albeit a little early.

It can be easy for motorists to ignore flashing lights on their dash, but what if the lights weren’t flashing because there was an issue with your electrics? If your fuel gauge has been playing up or your temperature gauge always tells you that the engine is running at 0 degrees – get it checked. Similarly, have a friend or family member take a tour of your car at night while you are in the driver seat and turn on any and all electrical safety features you have, such as your headlamps, indicators, brake lights, even fog lights. If you notice that one of your headlamps is dimmer than the other then it can be a sign it’s about to blow – which you don’t want to happen during your road trip because it means you need to pull over during the night portion of your trip and wait for the sun to come back.
